Found in Translation is our newest book club which started in late 2025.
The group meets on the third Wednesday of every alternate month from 6pm to 7.30pm in the bookshop.
Books will be chosen in advance and will rotate around the globe; specifically with the aim of looking at how words are interpreted in translation.
JOIN THE CLUB
The book club meetings are seated events, so places are limited, and events can get pretty full. Please email Jules on jules@northbooks.co.uk to add your name to the list. Participation is free and if the book is purchased in advance from North Books a 10% discount is offered.
At North Books, 4 Castle Street, Hay-on-Wye on Wednesday 21 January, 6–7.30pm.
THE BOOK
The third novel up for discussion on Wednesday 21 January is The Year of the Hare by Paso Paasilinna. This book is available from North Books at a 10% discount if you are joining the discussion.
Arto Tapio Paasilinna was a Finnish writer, being a former journalist turned comic novelist. One of Finland's most successful novelists, he won a broad readership outside of Finland in a way few other Finnish authors have before. Translated into 27 languages, over seven million copies of his books have been sold worldwide, and he has been claimed as "instrumental in generating the current level of interest in books from Finland"
A journalist and a photographer set out on an assignment on lovely sunny evening. As they drive through the country they hit a young hare. Vatanen, the journalist, leaves the car and goes in search of the injured creature. The grateful animal adopts Vatanen and together the two scamper through farcical adventures and political scandal.
