Found in Translation is our newest book club which started in late 2025.
The group meets on the third Wednesday of every alternate month from 5pm to 6.30pm in the bookshop (please note new timing for 2026).
Books will be chosen in advance and will rotate around the globe; specifically with the aim of looking at how words are interpreted in translation.
JOIN THE CLUB
The book club meetings are seated events, so places are limited, and events can get pretty full. Please email Jules on jules@northbooks.co.uk to add your name to the list. Participation is free and if the book is purchased in advance from North Books a 10% discount is offered.
At North Books, 4 Castle Street, Hay-on-Wye on Wednesday 18 March, 5-6.30pm.
THE BOOK
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulkakov was the fourth book on FIT’s reading list in March.
The fifth novel up for discussion on Wednesday 20 May is On The Calculation of Volume I by Solvej Balle. This book is available from North Books at a 10% discount if you are joining the discussion, which was on the shortlist for the International Booker Prize 2025.
Tara Selter has slipped out of time. Every morning, she wakes up to the 18th of November. She no longer expects to wake up to the 19th of November, and she no longer remembers the 17th of November as if it were yesterday.
She comes to know the shape of the day like the back of her hand - the grey morning light in her Paris hotel; the moment a blackbird breaks into song; her husband's surprise at seeing her return home unannounced. But for everyone around her, this day is lived for the first and only time. They do not remember the other 18ths of November, and they do not believe her when she tries to explain.
As Tara approaches her 365th 18th of November, she can't shake the feeling that somewhere underneath the surface of this day, there's a way to escape. Winner of the Nordic Council Prize for Literature, On the Calculation of Volume I is the first volume of the poetic, page-turning European masterpiece about one woman's fall through the cracks of time.
